On Saturday October 24, 2020, we took part in a 100 Kata Challenge.
At our full-time dojo we gathered to perform 100 kata of our choice. Some people did a few kata many times, some did ten kata ten times, or even more kata fewer times.
I took some timelapse of the event.
Our black belts busted out one extra, for good measure! Hell yeah!
The kata I practiced were:
- 10x Taigyoku shodan
- 10x Taigyoku nidan
- 10x Saifa
- 5x Bassai-dai
- 10x Seiunchin
- 5x Empi
- 10x Sanseru
- 10x Sepai
- 10x Hangetsu
- 10x Kururunfa
- 1x each of the first 8 kata + 1 more Sanseru + 1 more Sepai
I found the mental journey interesting, it went something like this:
I have never done this before, I don’t know what it is going to be like! Is Sensei going to tell us how we should do each one? Can I remember the later kata well enough to do them by myself?
Only 20 minutes in and I am sooo sweaty!
Why am I doing this again?
I have never sweated so much in my life!
I don’t think I can do Bassai-dai ten times in a row…
Nope! I’m going on to Seiunchin.
Can I devour this apple in less than five minutes?
I have never sweated so much in my life!
This is kind of awesome
Ooh! Someone near me is doing Kururunfa, I’ll jump on that wagon.
Only ten more to go?! I am not going to hold back.
That was 100?! I could do a few more…
Wow, I am really sweaty!
I did a 100 Kata challenge in region 1 a few years back and it was a fantastic experience. Good job Kristen on doing it too.
